Lithium and Lithium Ion Battery Testing
In August, 2007, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) issued its final rule for the transportation of lithium and lithium ion batteries. The purpose of the rulemaking was to "harmonize" the requirements with other international regulations including the UN Recommendations for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods.

In summary, there are a total of eight (8) tests required as follows (T1 – T8): T1 - Altitude Simulation– simulates air transport under low-pressure conditions (approximately 50,000 ft). T2 - Thermal Cycle– assesses cell and battery seal integrity and is well as internal electrical connections; test is conducted using rapid and extreme temperature changes. T3 - Vibration – simulates vibration during transport. T4 - Shock – simulates possible mechanical shocks during transport. T5 - External Short Circuit – simulates conditions of an external short circuit to the battery. T6 - Impact – simulates an object impacting the a cells exterior casing. T7 - Overcharge – evaluates the ability of a rechargeable battery to withstand an abnormally high charging current condition. T8 - Forced Discharge – evaluates the ability of a primary (non-rechargeable) or rechargeable cell to withstand a forced "maximum" discharge current condition.
